Naqsh-e-Lucknow — Where Every Stitch Tells a Story
Step into the world of Chikankari, the delicate hand embroidery that defines the grace of Lucknow.
Naqsh-e-Lucknow is a creative digital space that celebrates this centuries-old craft — its origin, artisans, and enduring beauty that continues to inspire the world.
Naqsh-e-Lucknow is a digital storytelling project created to honor the artistry of Chikankari — the elegant embroidery that emerged from the heart of Lucknow. This website isn’t about commerce; it’s about culture. It’s about understanding the story behind every stitch, tracing its journey from the royal courts of the Mughals to the hands of today’s artisans.
As a digital marketing student, I created Naqsh-e-Lucknow to blend creativity with culture — to digitally preserve a craft that embodies patience, artistry, and grace.
The Art of Chikankari
“The Poetry of Threads”
Chikankari is one of India’s most exquisite forms of hand embroidery, known for its subtle beauty and intricate detail. Originating under the patronage of Empress Nur Jahan in the Mughal era, the art was traditionally done on fine muslin with white thread symbolizing purity and simplicity.
Each stitch in Chikankari has a name, a rhythm, and a purpose. With over 30 types of stitches like Phanda, Bakhiya, Murri, and Jali, this craft turns ordinary fabric into timeless poetry.

The Artisans
“The Hands That Weave Dreams”
Behind every masterpiece of Chikankari lies the dedication of the artisans of Lucknow — generations of skilled hands who carry this tradition in their hearts. Each artisan breathes life into the fabric, creating motifs inspired by nature — flowers, leaves, vines, and delicate jaalis.
Their work is not just craftsmanship; it’s emotion, culture, and identity. Naqsh-e-Lucknow celebrates these silent creators who keep this art alive, stitch by stitch.
